Installing Kali Linux on Oracle VirtualBox

I had to set up Kali Linux on Oracle VirtualBox as part of a Mythos project automation and thought I'd share my experience with others who may encounter similar issues. While setting up both 'Shared Clipboard' and 'Drag and Drop' to 'Bidirectional', neither clipboard sharing nor drag-and-drop functionality worked in either direction.

To overcome this, you'll need to follow these steps:

First, ensure that you're running Kali Linux 2020-1-vbox-amd64-ova on VirtualBox 6.0.16 with OS X 10.14.6 as your host operating system.

Next, allocate sufficient CPU resources for your virtual machine. The number of CPU cores required depends on the power of your computer's processor. To adjust this setting:

1. Open the Vbox preferences for VMs.

2. Go to the System > Processor tab.

3. Read the helpful hints provided before entering the root password.

Now, create a new virtual machine by opening VirtualBox and clicking New.

In the Virtual Machine wizard, enter a name for your virtual machine (e.g., Kali-VirtualBox). If your network doesn't use a domain, you can leave this field blank.

Installing VirtualBox

If you're installing VirtualBox on an Ubuntu-based system, there are two ways to add its repository:

* Add the repository directory to /etc/apt/sources.list.

* Use the command-line option: `sudo apt-add-repository 'deb xenial contrib'`

Note that if you're using a different version of Ubuntu, replace 'xenial' with your version name in the above command.

Accessing Virtual Machine Settings

To access the settings of your virtual machine:

1. Right-click on your virtual machine in the list.

2. Click on the 'Settings' option.

Here, you can enter your Linux system's hostname, for example, kali-virtualbox.

By following these steps and adjusting the CPU resources allocated to your virtual machine, you should be able to successfully install Kali Linux on Oracle VirtualBox.
